Last night we sat down to watch our infamous South African comedian, Trevor Noah, live on one of the United States’ most popular TV shows, The Tonight Show, hosted by Jay Leno.
Let’s just say – he did us proud. He is pretty hysterical, although has been widely criticized for his stint as the Cell C brand ambassador. But it’s true what they say – no publicity is bad publicity, well maybe in the case of Lindsay Lohan, but let’s not go there.
The only thing that irks me about many SA comedians is that the majority of their performance dances around race – pre-apartheid, post-apartheid and everything in-between. Don’t get me wrong – it’s absolutely hysterical, and so true in many cases, but have we not moved on since 1994? I mean is there no other subject matter equally worthy for performance purposes? Just putting it out there. I for one look forward to a comedian who can make us laugh without using race as a foundation.
But in the same breath, using race as prime subject matter does unlock many human truths and let’s face it, we all enjoy a good laugh at ourselves once in a while.
So Trev, good on ya. I thought the performance was outstanding. My favourite part was him ‘reciting’ the alphabet :-). na’mean.
For those of you who missed it, here it is.
